Temporary Approval of 60 days is being granted. To obtain a longer approval, OSMRE must submit data from several states on the number of dwellings within 1/2 mile of surface mines. Data for underground mines only, while helpful, will not be sufficient. Any alterations to this information collection that may occur when the regulations are published as final rules must be submitted for approval.

SECTION 515 OF P.L. 95-87 PROVIDES THAT PERMITTEES CONDUCTING SURFACE COAL MINING OPERATIONS SHA MEET ALL APPLICABLE PERFORMANCE STANDARDS OF THE ACT. THIS INFORMATIO IS USED BY REGULATORY AUTHORITY IN MONITORING AND INSPECTING SURFACE MINING ACTIVITIES TO ENSRE THAT THEY ARE CONDUCTED IN A MANNER WHICH PRESERVES AND ENHANCES ENVIRONMENTAL AND OTHER VALUES OF THE ACT.
