Terms of Clearance: We have approved continued use of these recordkeeping requirements through April 1989. By letter dated July 14, 1988, the Department has assured us that the agency will undertake a regulatory review of these requirements and will publish a proposed rule by April 1989. This action is consistent with the concerns that we have previously raised on May 12, 1986 that a certification would appear to fulfill the agency's mission while imposing less burden. In order to allow us to extend approval these requirements past April 1989, the agency must publish a proposed rule as stated in the Department's letter.

Abstract: MINE SAFETY, SAFETY REGULATION, MINING INDUSTRY, EQUIPMENT MAINTENANC REQUIRES UNDERGROUND COAL MINE OPERATORS TO RECORD AND MAKE AVAILABLE RESULTS OF EXAMINERS OF SELF-RESCUERS. THE INFORMATION IS USED TO INSURE THAT THE SELF-RESCUERS ARE IN OPERABLE AND USABLE CONDITION IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY.
