We have approved this collection of information for one year to allow MSHA time to complete its evaluation of the Respirable Dust Sampling Program. Currently, MSHA is reviewing how it can reduce the sampling burden on the MSHA inspectors within mines (inspectors as well as mine operators must sample the dust levels in mines). Some ways of reducing the sampling burden on inspectors may be applicable to reducing the sampling burden on mine operators. For example, MSHA is assessing whether there is new sampling methodology and/or technology available which could reduce the burden. (At this time, five dust samples must be taken in order to get one statistically accurate reading of dust exposure levels.) After completing its evaluation of dust sampling for its inspectors, MSHA will use the results to re-examine this information collection requirement.
