Terms of Clearance:
Approved as amended by DOL's memoranda to OMB of 2/97, 3/26/97, 3/27/97, 4/3/97, and 4/4/97. Approval through December 1997 will allow OSHA to continue its efforts to develop a comprehensive data set that is consistent with the scope of this effort as approved September 1995, and to complete the validation study activities on which approval continues to be conditioned. OSHA has developed a comprehensive validation study program to assess data quality, and initial results from this program show promise. OSHA is to be commended for this program, and OMB looks forward to reviewing the final results -- including the analysis for site visits, BLS overlap, and external data comparisons -- prior to the next PRA review of the Data Collection. OSHA's continued fielding of this effort will depend on a continued showing that the data are valid and reliable based on completion and analysis of the full program of data validation activities, including the site visit records audits. In addition, OSHA has agreed to the following conditions: 1) OSHA will accept faxed responses this year, and if feasible will accept automated responses through a pilot project using the internet. The next fielding of this collection will allow an option for fully automated responses over the internet. 2) OSHA will continue to evaluate the potential for biannual data collection in future submissions.

To meet many of OSHA's program needs, OSHA is proposing to continue their data initiative to collect occupational injury and illness data and information on number of workers employed and number of hours worked from establishments in portions of the private sector.
