Applicants (companies producing and/or marketing shot or shot coatings) provide information from scientific literature, risk assessment, and toxicity studies. We analyze this information about the candidate material to approve or deny a designation as nontoxic for hunting waterfowl and coots.

Based on our outreach and the actual number of applications received during the past 3 years, we revised our estimated number of responses from one to two, which resulted in an increase of 3,200 burden hours (from 3,200 to 6,400 hours). Also based on information gained during our outreach, we estimate $34,000 for annual nonhour burden costs that companies may incur to contract out for tests and analyses necessary to include in the application. Previously, we did not include any nonhour burden costs.
