This ICR is approved. However, per the concern raised by a public commenter, HRSA should explore ways the HIPDB can be improved to provide the type of information the public seems to find useful (i.e. a way to prevent healthcare providers from avoiding investigation or disciplinary action by moving from community to community). As HRSA has duly noted, however, the utility of such improvements should be weighed against the increased burden that might result. Upon resubmission of this ICR, HRSA shall report in the supporting statement how they have explored this issue, how the ICR was revised as a result (if at all), and provide a justification for those changes (or for no changes). HRSA should also continue to monitor ways in which overlap between HIPDB and NPDB can be further minimized.

Abstract:
Section 1128 E of the Social Security Act directs the Secretary of Health and Human Services to establish a national health care fraud and abuse data collection program for the reporting and disclosure of certain final adverse actions taken against health care providers, suppliers, or practitioners. The Health Integrity and Protection Data Bank (HIPDB)is the database maintaining final adverse actions taken against health care providers, suppliers, or practitioners.
