Abstract:
Commercial fishing is the most dangerous occupation in the US. Drowning is the leading cause of death for commercial fishermen. Most fishermen do not wear PFDs while on deck. The purpose of this study is to identify fishermen's perceptions of risk, safety attitudes and beliefs about PFDs, and to evaluate a variety of PFDs to discover features they like and dislike. In phase I, a questionnaire will be administered to fishermen to collect data on risk perceptions, saftey attitudes, and beliefs about PFDs from 400 fishermen. In Phase II, fishermen who completed Phase I will be invited to wear and evaluate a PFD during fishing season. This study will benefit the fishing industry. Safety professionals will be better equipped to address concerns and remove barriers about PFDs. Findings will provide manufacturers information about preferences and expectations. The PFD evaluation will supply information to fishermen about which PFDs are most comfortable to wear while working.
