Abstract:
Commercial motor vehicle drivers who are subject to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations must meet certain medical requirements. This revision is due to a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM)entitled, "Medical Examiner's Certification Integration," which would require States to update their Commercial Driver's License Information System (CDLIS) driver records using medical certification and variance information provided electronically by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) for interstate Commercial Driver's License (CDL) drivers who are required to be certified in accordance with 49 CFR 391.41. The proposed rule would eliminate the requirement for these drivers to provide their medical examiner's certificates to their State Driver's Licensing Agency (SDLA). It would also eliminate the requirement for motor carriers to verify that their drivers were certified by a medical examiner (ME) on the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners (National Registry).
