Title: ●Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants; Listing Determination and Critical Habitat Designation for two Tennessee River Mussels
Abstract: We will make a listing determination and designate critical habitat for two Tennessee river mussels--fluted kidneyshell and slabside pearlymussel (Ptychobranchus subtentum and Lexingtonia dolabelloides)--pursuant to the Endangered Species Act of 1973. We will propose to list as endangered or threatened, and designate critical habitat for, these two freshwater mussels, which are endemic to the Tennessee and Cumberland River systems in Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, Alabama, and Mississippi. Once widely distributed, the fluted kidneyshell is now limited to 12 locations, and the slabside pearlymussel is found in only 10 sites. These species depend on clear, clean, free-flowing shoal habitat, and the presence of host fish for reproduction. Major threats include impoundment (dams), environmental contaminants, sedimentation, and direct loss of habitat.
