Title: ●Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants; 12-Month Finding and, If Warranted, Listing Determination and Critical Habitat Designation for the Spring Pygmy Sunfish
Abstract: If warranted for listing, we will make a listing determination and designate critical habitat for the spring pygmy sunfish (Elassoma alabamae) pursuant to the Endangered Species Act. We completed a 90-day substantial finding for the species on April 1, 2011, and plan to publish a 12-month finding regarding whether or not listing is warranted. If listing is warranted, we intend to publish, concurrent with the finding, a proposed rule to list the species as threatened or endangered and designate critical habitat. The spring pygmy sunfish is a diminutive member of the sunfish family that is currently found only in Beaverdam Creek, a spring system on the outskirts of Huntsville, Alabama. It is dependent on cold, clear water and aquatic vegetation. All of the species' habitat occurs on private land.
