Title: ●Fisheries in the Western Pacific; Pelagic Fisheries; Purse Seine Closed Area Around Guam and Purse Seine and Longline Closed Areas Around the Northern Mariana Islands
Abstract: The Western Pacific Fishery Management Council recommends that U.S. tuna purse seine vessels be excluded from operating within the U.S. EEZ around the Mariana Islands, including Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, and that pelagic longline fishing be excluded within 30 nm of the Northern Mariana Islands. Amendment 17 to the Fishery Management Plan for the Pelagic Fisheries of the Western Pacific Region intends to minimize localized stock depletion by the purse seine fishery and reduce catch competition between the purse seine and small-boat pelagic (e.g., troll and handline) fisheries. Amendment 17 also intends to reduce competition for target species and gear conflicts between small-boat pelagic fisheries and the longline fishery.
