Title: Chronic Beryllium Disease Prevention Program
Abstract: Title 10 CFR 850 "Chronic Beryllium Disease Prevention Program" was issued on December 8, 1999, to reduce the number of workers currently exposed to beryllium in the course of their work at DOE facilities managed by DOE or its contractors; to minimize the levels of, and potential for, exposure to beryllium; and to establish medical surveillance requirements to ensure early detection of the disease. The rule includes monitoring and collecting data on workers' jobs, exposures, and health status. The DOE now has nearly seven years of job, exposure, and health data, as well as experience implementing the rule, since its full compliance dated of January 7, 2002. The DOE has identified several improvements that will render the rule better aligned to workersÂ’ risks, more complete in addressing workersÂ’ risks in more types of spaces, and more efficient to implement.
