Title: HUD Debt Collection: Procedures for the Collection of Claims by the Government (FR-5166-P-01)
Abstract: This rule would revise and update regulations governing the procedures for the collection of claims by HUD. The Debt Collection Improvement Act of 1996 (DCIA) consolidated responsibility for collection of delinquent Federal debt within the Department of the Treasury. The DCIA requires agencies to transfer to Treasury debts that are more than 180 days delinquent. If, prior to the transfer, HUD's collection efforts have resulted in the debtor's requesting a hearing or other review, the procedures in this rule will apply. They will apply also with respect to a debt that HUD has transferred to Treasury if the debtor requests a hearing or review in response to a notice that Treasury has issued.
