Title: ●Emergency Rule To Reduce Turtle Bycatch in the Gulf of Mexico Reef Fish Bottom Longline Fishery
Abstract: In September 2008, NOAAs National Marine Fisheries (NMFS) released a report based on observer data that indicated the total number of loggerhead sea turtle takes by the eastern Gulf of Mexico reef fish bottom longline fishery was much greater than that authorized in the most recent biological opinion. Therefore, the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council (Council) requested NMFS take emergency action to reduce the number of takes by the fishery. The action requested by the Council is to move the bottom longline component of the eastern Gulf of Mexico reef fish fishery out to 50 fathoms to reduce sea turtle take for 2009 fishing year. This rule would reduce take in the short term while the Council develops long-term measures to reduce sea turtle take in a plan amendment.
