Title: Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants; Revised Special Rule for the Utah Prairie Dog
Abstract: We are revising our special rule promulgated under section 4(d) of the Endangered Species Act and found at 50 CFR 17.40 for the Utah prairie dog. The revised rule will lower the annual take of Utah prairie dogs on agricultural lands from the currently allowed 6,000 animals to approximately 900-1,700 animals, which is more consistent with the number of Utah prairie dogs actually taken annually since the special rule was issued and the current size of the Utah prairie dog population. The revised rule will also allow private landowners to use purposeful lethal control if approved and mitigated for under Safe Harbor Agreements and Habitat Conservation Plan agreements, which will allow for more flexibility in managing Utah prairie dogs.
