Title: Realign FMVSS No. 305, Electric Powered Vehicles: Electrolyte Spillage and Electrical Shock Protection With SAE J1766
Abstract: This rulemaking would amend Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 305, Electric Powered Vehicles: Electrolyte Spillage and Electrical Shock Protection, by adding requirements for electrical isolation for direct current electrical power sources in addition to the existing requirements based upon alternating current, and would update the requirements to address forms of electrical energy storage devices other than batteries, including hydrogen fuel cells. On April 15, 2005, the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers (Alliance) petitioned the agency to amend the requirements of FMVSS No. 305. Alliance specifically petitioned that FMVSS No. 305 be realigned with the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) J1766 Recommended Practice for Electric and Hybrid Electric Vehicle Battery Systems Crash Integrity Testing which was updated in March 2005 to accommodate fuel cell vehicles (FCVs).
