Title: U.S. Honey Producer Research, Promotion, and Consumer Information Order and Referendum Procedures (AMS-FV-07-0091)
Abstract: The U.S. Honey Producer Research, Promotion, and Consumer Information Order would be implemented under the Commodity Promotion, Research, and Information Act of 1996. The purpose of the new program would be to increase consumption of U.S. produced honey. This proposed new program will assist the U.S. honey industry to develop and finance an effective and coordinated program to strengthen the position of the U.S. honey industry; and maintain, develop, and expand existing markets for U.S. honey. In the past few decades, U.S. commercial bee keepers have seen a worrisome and dramatic decline in the population of U.S. honeybees. According to a report released in 2006 by the National Research Council, the population of American honeybees has plunged by 30 percent in 20 years and so therefore production has also declined substantially. It is the hope of the U.S. honey industry that a Research and Promotion Program will help increase consumption of U.S. honey.
