Title: ●National Organic Program: Notice of Guidance Concerning "Made with Organic" (NOP-10-0045)
Abstract: The Agricultural Marketing Services' National Organic Program is establishing this guidance document to (1) clarify that the term "organic" may only appear in brand and company names on principal display panels of processed products which qualify for "organic or "100 percent organic" label claims. (2) Clarify product compostion rquirements for the "made with organic" category. The guidance illustrates that non-organic agricultural ingredients and certain other substances may comprise up to 30 percent of the product. There has been varying interpretations within the organic industry of whether substances which do not appear in the regulations may be used as ingredients or processing aids in/on the non-organic portion of the product. (3) Finally, the guidance document advises that a statement of the total organic ingredients cannot be displayed on a label in the absence of a "made with orgnic" statement.
