Title: ●National Organic Program, Amendments to the National List (Methionine), NOP-10-0051
Abstract: The Agricultural Marketing Servive is amending the National Organic regulations to extend the use of Methionine in organic poultry production until October 2012. The National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) has determined that the loss of the use of Methionine, at this time, would disrupt the well-established organic poultry market and cause substantial economic harm to organic poultry operations. To prevent disruption to the market, while the organic feed sector creates sufficient supplies of wholly natural substitute products, the NOSB has recommended extending the allowed use of Methionine in poultry production until 2012 at the following maximum levels of synthetic methionine per tone in the feed ration: Laying chickens - 4 pounds per ton; Broiler chickens - 5 pounds per ton; and Turkeys and all other poultry - 6 pounds per ton.
