Title: Amendment 34 to the Fishery Management Plan for the Bering Sea/Aleutian Islands King and Tanner Crabs
Abstract: Amendment 34 to the FMP would amend the Bering Sea/Aleutian Islands Crab Rationalization Program to exempt additional fishery participants from harvest limits, called sideboards, which apply to some vessels that participate in Gulf of Alaska groundfish fisheries. Amendment 34 would revise the criteria that enable some vessels to operate exempt from sideboards in the Gulf of Alaska Pacific cod fishery. Amendment 34 would also establish criteria to enable certain vessels to operate exempt from sideboards in the Gulf of Alaska pollock fishery. The current sideboards impose an economic burden on some fishery participants that received relatively small amounts of quota share in the Bering Sea/Aleutian Islands Crab Rationalization Program and are dependent on Gulf of Alaska Pacific cod or pollock fisheries. This action is intended to promote the goals of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, the FMP, and other applicable laws.
