USDA/AMS RIN: 0581-AC96 Publication ID: Fall 2011
Title: National Organic Program, Amendments to the National List, Sunset 2012 (NOP-09-0074)
Abstract: As required by the Organic Foods Production Act of 1990 (OFPA), the allowed use or prohibition of over 200 synthetic substances in organic production and handling will expire on June 27, 2012. The Agricultural Marketing Service will publish a proposed rule that addresss recommendations submitted to the Secretary of Agriculture by the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) on April 29, 2010, and April 29, 2011. These recommendations pertain to the 2012 Sunset Review of substances on the National List. If this review process is not concluded by June 27, 2012, then listings for over 200 substances critical in the production and handling of a wide array of raw and processed organic products will sunset, causing broad disruption to well-established and accepted organic production, handling and processing systems.
