0648-BB29 201110 The Regulatory Plan and the Unified Agenda of Federal Regulatory and Deregulatory Actions 0648 National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration NOAA 0600 Department of Commerce DOC Atlantic Highly Migratory Species; Atlantic Shark Management Measures This rulemaking would evaluate the management measures for several shark species based on recent shark stock assessments. The rulemaking could consider, among other things, a range of commercial and recreational management measures in both directed and incidental shark fisheries including, but not limited to: quota levels, regional and seasonal quotas, retention limits, gear modifications, and time/area closures. In addition, this rulemaking would implement a rebuilding plan for scalloped hammerhead sharks, as NMFS recently determined that scalloped hammerhead sharks are overfished with overfishing occurring (April 28, 2011, 76 FR 23794) based on a stock assessment adopted in 2011 for this species. Sandbar, dusky, and blacknose sharks are currently being assessed with the final results expected to be released in mid-2011. Based on the results of these assessments, NMFS may need to re-evaluate current management measures for these species.
