Title: Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants; Western Snowy Plover Critical Habitat Designation
Abstract: Under a settlement agreement, we propose critical habitat designation for the western snowy plover (Charadrius alexandrinus nivosus), one of two subspecies of snowy plover to nest in North America. A small shorebird that occurs on sandy beaches, barren salt flats, or dry mudflats along the coast from Washington, Oregon, and California, the western snowy plover is also found in Baja California, Mexico. The Pacific coast population of the western snowy plover (Pacific Coast WSP) is defined as those individuals nesting adjacent to tidal waters of the Pacific Ocean, and includes all nesting birds on the mainland coast, peninsulas, offshore islands, adjacent bays, estuaries, and coastal rivers.
