Title: Guidelines To Avoid and Minimize Wildlife Impacts From Wind Turbines
Abstract: We are developing voluntary guidelines intended to assist the wind energy industry in avoiding or minimizing impacts to wildlife and their habitats related to land-based wind energy facilities. The guidelines will cover: (1) Proper evaluation of areas for wind energy development, (2) proper location and design of turbines and associated structures, and (3) pre- and post-construction research and monitoring to identify and/or assess impacts to wildlife. Our guidelines will address all FWS trust resources with a focus on bird and bat species, and work to avoid or minimize impacts to their habitats, considering compensatory mitigation as one option.
