Title: Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants; Listing and Critical Habitat Designation for the Umtanum Desert Buckwheat and White Bluffs Bladderpod
Abstract: We will propose to list as endangered or threatened and designate critical habitat for the Umtanum Desert buckwheat (Eriogonum codium) and White Bluffs bladderpod (Physaria douglasii ssp. tuplashensis) under the Endangered Species Act. The Umtanum Desert buckwheat is endemic to a very narrow range in Benton County in south central Washington. The only known population of this species occurs along one ridgeline, on flat to gently sloping microsites, near the top of the steep, north-facing basalt cliffs overlooking the Columbia River. The White Bluffs bladderpod is a narrow endemic species found only in a very small area in Franklin County, Washington, adjacent to the Columbia River. The species is restricted to dry, barren, nearly vertical exposures of calcium carbonate paleosol (caliche soil).
