Title: ●Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants; Listing Determination and Critical Habitat Designation for Three Sierra Amphibians
Abstract: We will make a listing determination and designate critical habitat for three Sierra amphibians pursuant to the Endangered Species Act: Yosemite toad (Bufo canorus), mountain yellow-legged frog (Rana muscosa) (Sierra distinct population segment), and Sierra yellow-legged frog (R. sierrae). The first two are on the list of candidates. Twelve-month findings for the two were completed on December 10, 2002 (67 FR 75834), and January 16, 2003 (68 FR 2283), respectively. Subsequently, mountain yellow-legged frog has gone through a taxonomic change and has been split into two separate species; the split-off species is the Sierra yellow-legged frog. We will propose to recognize the new taxonomy and determine the status of all three species. The historic range of Yosemite toad is in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, from Alpine County to south of Kaiser Pass in Fresno County. The threats currently facing the Yosemite toad include cattle grazing, timber harvesting, recreation, disease, and the effects of climate change. The other two species inhabit the high-elevation lakes, ponds, and streams in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. Predation by introduced trout, disease, and the effects of climate change are the major threats facing both the mountain yellow-legged frog and the Sierra yellow-legged frog.
