Title: ●Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants; Listing Determination and Critical Habitat Designation for the Vandenberg Monkeyflower
Abstract: We will make a listing determination and designate critical habitat for the Vandenberg monkeyflower (Mimulus fremontii var. vandenbergensis) pursuant to the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended. The Vandenberg monkeyflower occurs only in western Santa Barbara County, California, at lower elevations and closer to the coast, in sandy openings of coastal scrub, chaparral, and woodlands on an old dune sheet known as Burton Mesa. On November 10, 2010, we added the Vandenberg monkeyflower to our candidate list in the Review of Native Species that are Candidates for Listing as Endangered or Threatened (75 FR 69222). The threats currently facing Mimulus fremontii var. vandenbergensis include alteration and destruction of habitat from development, habitat fragmentation, alteration of hydrology, competition with nonnative species, alteration of fire regimes, stochastic extinction due to small population size, and the effects of climate change.
