Title: Firepots Used With Gel Fuel
Abstract: Staff identified firepots used with gel fuel as an emerging hazard in summer 2011, after severe injuries were reported to the CPSC. Subsequent staff investigations led to voluntary recalls in September 2011 of alcohol gel fuel containers intended to be used with firepots. In an effort to seek a more permanent means to reduce or eliminate the hazard posed by firepots using gel fuel, CPSC staff prepared a briefing package in December 2011, requesting that the Commission vote to approve publication of an advance notice of proposed rulemaking (ANPRM) that initiates a rulemaking proceeding. The Commission voted unanimously to approve publication in the Federal Register of the ANPRM addressing the risk of injury associated with firepots and gel fuel. The comment period ended on February 27, 2012. Staff is preparing an NPRM briefing package for Commission consideration.
