Title: Taking of Marine Mammals Incidental to U.S. Marine Corps Training Activities at Marine Air Corps Station Cherry Point Range Complex
Abstract: The National Marine Fisheries Service, upon request from the United States Marine Corps, plans to propose regulations under the Marine Mammal Protection Act to govern the unintentional taking of marine mammals incidental to training activities in support of military readiness activities. The proposed regulations will set forth the permissible methods of taking; means of effecting the least practicable adverse impact on the affected species or stocks and their habitats and, if applicable, on their availability for taking for subsistence uses; and requirements pertaining to the monitoring and reporting of such taking. Letters of Authorization issued under the regulations would authorize the take of bottlenose dolphins incidental to weapons delivery training activities (i.e., gunnery, mine laying, bombing, or rocket exercises) for a 5-year period in Pamlico Sound, North Carolina.
