Title: Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants; Critical Habitat Designations for Six Species in American Samoa (Friendly Ground-Dove et al.) | |
Abstract:
We will, if determined to be prudent and determinable, designate critical habitat for six American Samoa species: the Pacific sheath-tailed bat, spotless crake, friendly ground-dove, sisi-snail, fragile tree snail, and Tutuila tree snail, pursuant to the Endangered Species Act. We are required to designate critical habitat, to the maximum extent prudent and determinable, concurrent with a listing determination for the species. We will develop a listing determination for the six species as a separate rulemaking action (1018-AZ97). All of these species are endemic to one or more countries within the Polynesian and Northern Mariana Islands, including American Samoa. The Pacific sheath-tailed bat is a cave-dependent species. The spotless crake is a furtive bird whose primary habitat consists of freshwater wetlands dominated by dense emergent vegetation. The friendly ground-dove is found in scrubby bush and bamboo thickets on smaller Polynesian islands, and lowland and montane forest on the larger islands. The sisi-snail and the Tutuila tree snail are both thought to occur in Manu'a County, American Samoa. The fragile tree snail is thought to occur in both Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands. |
