We will, if determined to be prudent and determinable, designate critical habitat for the Pacific fisher (West Coast Distinct Population Segment (DPS)), under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). We are required to designate critical habitat, to the maximum extent prudent and determinable, concurrent with a listing determination for the species. We will make a listing determination for the Pacific fisher (West Coast DPS) under the ESA as a separate rulemaking action (RIN 1018-BA05). The Pacific fisher's habitat consists of older forests with high canopy cover and mature and old-growth forests. The species rests, nests, and takes cover in downed wood, high cavities in dead tree snags, and clumps of tree branches. The range of the West Coast DPS of the Pacific fisher includes 15 counties in California and five counties in Oregon.
