Title: Foam Type Fire Extinguishing Systems
Abstract:

The Coast Guard is proposing to set type approval standards for foam firefighting systems to be used on vessel tanker decks and machinery spaces, and helidecks on offshore platforms. While the Coast Guard has been approving these types of systems for years, this effort proposes to codify the existing guidance in regulation. Furthermore, we are proposing that certain firefighting systems, for use in fighting smaller fires, can be tested to a different standard than those used in fighting large-scale fires on oil tankers. Finally, we are making slight modifications to the testing procedures to allow additional flexibility and testing options. This rulemaking supports the Coast Guard's maritime safety mission.
