NTSB RIN: 3147-AA12 Publication ID: Spring 2015
Title: Rules Pertaining to Notification of Railroad Accidents
Abstract: The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) plans to revise 49 CFR part 840, which contains notification requirements applicable to railroad events. Operators of railroads are required to notify the NTSB of certain occurrences on railroads. The NTSB plans to update the definitions section of part 840 with some substantive changes. Prior to issuing an NPRM proposing such amendments, the NTSB plans to issue a notice that will provide corrected contact information and other minor, technical changes not subject to the notice and comment procedure. The NTSB will most likely issue this notice in conjunction with the minor, technical edits it makes to 49 CFR part 830. The proposed substantive updates to part 840 will modernize the regulations as needed. The NTSB's notice for revising part 840 is a long-term goal, and follows a notice the NTSB published in the Federal Register in June 2012, which indicated the NTSB would review all NTSB regulations and amend them to ensure they are up-to-date, in accordance with Executive Orders 13563 and 13579.
