Title: Taking Marine Mammals Incidental to Survey Activities of the National Marine Fisheries Service, Northeast Fisheries Science Center
Abstract: The National Marine Fisheries Service is proposing regulations to govern the unintentional taking of marine mammals incidental to survey activities conducted in support of fisheries management. The regulations and related Letters of Authorization would authorize takes incidental to the Northeast Fisheries Science Centers survey activities. The specified activities involve the use of movable gear (e.g., trawl nets, longlines) and sound sources that have the potential to impact marine mammals. The activities include specific measures (e.g., gear modifications, survey protocols) designed to reduce the impact of the activity to the level of least practicable adverse impact. The regulations would apply only to the Northeast Fisheries Science Center and its designees. The regulations will set forth the permissible methods of taking and means of affecting the least practicable adverse impact on the affected species or stocks and their habitats.
