Title: ●Pacific Island Fisheries; Marianas Archipelago Bottomfish; Remove the CNMI Medium and Large Vessel Bottomfish Prohibited Areas
Abstract: The Western Pacific Fishery Management Council recommended amending its Fishery Ecosystem Plan for the Marianas Archipelago. If approved by the Secretary of Commerce, Amendment 4 would remove the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands medium and large vessel (vessels 40 ft and longer) bottomfish prohibited areas, originally established to reduce fishing pressure and maintain optimum yield. Information collected since then indicates the closed areas can safely be opened. The intent of Amendment 4 is to improve the viability of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands bottomfish fishery and achieve optimum yield from the fishery.
