Title: National Park System Units in Alaska; Subsistence Collection | |
Abstract:
The rule allows qualified subsistence users to collect and use non-edible animal parts and plant materials from limited National Park Service (NPS) areas to create, use, barter, or sell handicrafts. Existing NPS regulations do not allow for commercial transactions of handicraft articles that qualify as subsistence users under the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act. The rule also (1) clarifies that collection or possession of living wildlife is generally not allowed in NPS units and (2) limits the types of bait that may be used to take bears for subsistence uses. Broad public support, including from local rural residents, is expected. |
