Title: Aquatic Life Criteria for Cadmium in Oregon
Abstract: EPA finalized a water quality criterion in Oregon to protect aquatic life from the harmful effects of exposure to acutely toxic levels of cadmium. In January 2013, EPA disapproved Oregon's revised freshwater acute and chronic criteria for copper and acute criterion for cadmium, based on concerns that the criteria would not adequately protect aquatic life in Oregon. Oregon adopted criteria for copper that addressed EPA's disapproval; however, Oregon did not address EPA's disapproval of the acute cadmium criterion. Therefore, consistent with CWA Section 303(c)(3), EPA finalized an acute cadmium criterion to protect aquatic life in Oregon. This rule will improve water quality, protect aquatic life, and strengthen Oregon's natural ecosystem.
