The Rural Housing Service Single Family Housing (SFH) Self-Help Technical Assistance Grants programs provides grants to qualified organizations to help them carry out local self-help housing construction projects. Grant recipients supervise groups of very-low- and low-income individuals and families as they construct their own homes in rural areas. The group members provide most of the construction labor on each other’s homes, with technical assistance from the organization overseeing the project. Eligible applicants include government nonprofit organizations, federally recognized Tribes, and private nonprofit organizations.

Consistent with the Agency's goal that calls on its agencies to deliver programs efficiently, effectively, with integrity, and with a focus on positive customer experience, the SFH program has identified improvements that are intended to streamline and simplify SFH requirements to reduce paperwork and result in process improvement. The SFH program routinely meets with staff and partners to provide them the opportunity to discuss suggestions for process improvement to reduce burden on grantees and borrowers, increase flexibility of the program and improve overall customer satisfaction.
