NMFS is developing a proposed rule that would implement 2023-2025 specifications for the Mackerel, Squid, and Butterfish Fishery Management Plan as recommended by the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council at its July and August 2022 meetings.  This action would set the 2023-2025 chub mackerel specifications, the 2023-2024 butterfish specifications, and the 2023 Illex specifications, as well as reaffirm the 2023 longfin squid specifications (attachments).  NMFS intends to implement these specifications as close to January 2023 as possible.  The chub mackerel and Illex specifications would be identical to what is currently in place for the 2022 fishing year while the butterfish specifications would be slightly increased.  Atlantic mackerel specifications for 2023 will be set through the Council’s revised mackerel rebuilding amendment, which is currently under review.
