The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is developing a proposed rule to implement the Abbreviated Framework. The purpose of the Abbreviated Framework is to modify the overfishing limit (OFL), acceptable biological catch (ABC), and annual catch limit (ACL) for Gulf of Mexico (Gulf) lane snapper based a recent Southeast Data, Assessment, and Review 49 interim analysis and consistent with recommendations from the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council’s (Council) Scientific and Statistical Committee. The Council approved the Abbreviated Framework at its January 2024 meeting by a vote of 16-0 (1 absent) for review by the Secretary of Commerce. The need for this rule is to update existing Gulf lane snapper catch limits based on the best scientific information available and to achieve optimum yield while preventing overfishing, consistent with the requirements of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act.
