This part is composed of several subparts, each containing its own purpose. The purpose of the overall part, in accordance with the authority in DoD Directive 5124.02, "Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness (USD (P&R))," and DoD Directive 1020.02, "Diversity Management and Equal Opportunity (EO) in the Department of Defense," is to establish and implement policy, assign responsibilities, and provide procedures to prevent unlawful discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, or age in programs or activities that receive Federal financial assistance from the DoD or a DoD component. DoD is committed to maintaining a discrimination-free workplace. The revisions to this rule are part of DoD's retrospective plan under Executive Order 13563 completed in August 2011.
