1-bromopropane (1-BP, also known as n-propyl bromide) is an organic solvent used within adhesive formulations, metal surface cleaning operations, and as a solvent in the dry cleaning industry. Worker exposures to 1-BP were the subject of intense media scrutiny (NYT, NPR) in recent years because workers in the furniture industry with high exposures developed severe neurological effects including persistent leg weakness, numbness, headache, dizziness, eye irritation and difficulty concentrating. Animal studies have also shown effects on the male and female reproductive systems, liver, and hematopoietic systems. In October 2014, the National Toxicology Program classified 1-BP as reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen. There is no OSHA PEL for 1-BP. An RFI would allow the agency to explore the need for a new PEL or comprehensive rule.
