The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) proposes to establish safety requirements for mining activities around plugged or inactive oil or gas wells. Under current standards, mine operators are required to file a petition for modification and seek MSHA’s approval for such mining activities to ensure the safety and health of miners. The proposed rule would streamline the approval process and update the existing standards to reflect technological advances, while maintaining mine safety. MSHA intends to reach out to stakeholders, including mine operators, labor unions, industry trade associations, health and safety organizations, and the public to ensure broad stakeholder participation in the public comment period.
