<ABSTRACT>

To preserve consumer utility, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) established separate product classes for top-loading residential clothes washers and consumer clothes dryers that offer a short cycle time as the normal cycle. DOE intends to consider appropriate energy and water efficiency standards for such product classes in separate rulemakings.

DOE is re-evaluating the new short cycle product classes for residential dishwashers, residential clothes washers, and consumer clothes dryers in response to Executive Order 13900, Protecting Public Health and the Environment and Restoring Science to Tackle the Climate Crisis, 86 FR 7037 (Jan. 25, 2021). More information about this rulemaking can be found under RIN 1904-AF14.
