The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is updating certain provisions in DOE’s National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) implementing procedures regarding authorizations issued under section 3 of the Natural Gas Act. The changes would improve efficiency in DOE’s implementation of NEPA and update DOE’s NEPA procedures to be consistent with current legal principle. This would be accomplished, in part, by eliminating certain requirements of its existing regulations that DOE finds no longer necessary for the effective implementation of NEPA. These changes are independent of DOE's separately planned NEPA rulemaking (RIN 1990-AA48).
