This rulemaking would revise 40 CFR Part 437 to add a new subcategory to effluent limitations guidelines that apply to discharge of wastewater from oil and gas extraction facilities (called produced water) by centralized waste treatment facilities. The current rule contains definitions that may prohibit discharge of produced water. The rulemaking would evaluate increased opportunities for discharge of treated produced water by new sources of centralized waste treaters.
