<RULE_TITLE>Environmental Radiation Protection Standards for the Disposal of Low-Activity Mixed Radioactive Waste</RULE_TITLE>
<![CDATA[This rulemaking would address the problem of disposal of low-activity mixed radioactive wastes, consisting of a chemically hazardous component and low levels of radioactivity. These wastes are anticipated to arise in the commercial sector from various sources. The rulemaking is intended to increase disposal options for these wastes and offer a streamlined regulatory process which melds hazardous chemical protection and radioactivity protection requirements while protecting public health and safety. The rule would not mandate a disposal method, but rather would permit an alternative to existing disposal methods. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is anticipated to be the implementing Agency for the application of this rule. An Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking was issued in November 2003 to solicit early public input on this issue.]]>
