The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will propose rules to adjust the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and fuel economy standards for model years (MYs) 2022 through 2025 light-duty vehicles. EPA established national GHG emissions standards under the Clean Air Act that extend through 2025, and NHTSA established augural Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards for MY 2022-2025 vehicles under the Energy Policy and Conservation Act, as amended by the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA). This joint rulemaking will propose adjustments to those standards, following conclusion of the Mid-Term Evaluation (MTE) process and EPA’s Final Determination that it is appropriate to adjust the MY22-25 GHG emission standards.
