The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is amending its regulations to remove the requirement, imposed on both aircraft manufacturers and operators, that the signs indicating to passengers the prohibition of smoking must be constructed so a crewmember can turn them on and off. The current regulations were drafted when the Department of Transportation (DOT) permitted smoking in certain circumstances. Today, the DOT generally does not permit smoking at any time on aircraft. This rulemaking action would allow such regulated aircraft an alternative of operating with No Smoking signs illuminated constantly during flight.
