This rulemaking would consider requirements for rear impact guards and other safety strategies on single unit trucks to mitigate underride crashes into the rear of single unit trucks. This rulemaking would respond, in part, to a petition for rulemaking from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and another from Mrs. Marianne Karth and the Truck Safety Coalition regarding improved rear impact guards for single unit trucks, as outlined in the July 10, 2014, grant of the petition.
